Our Community News

It takes a community...

As many of you who read this are aware, the services and programs of The Gathering Place are offered free of charge to our participants. That means, of course, that we must fundraise in a variety of ways to support the costs of executing our programs.  We are very lucky to have an incredibly generous donor base made up of individual donors, foundations, and corporations that support The Gathering Place in a variety of ways.

One example of the incredible support we receive from the community comes in the form of community-based fundraisers.  This is when an individual or group of individuals approach The Gathering Place with an idea for a fundraiser that they plan and execute and proceeds from the event are donated to The Gathering Place.

We are always humbled and pleased to receive these queries because it demonstrates to us the good will and commitment of our community.  These fundraisers range from a small ‘friends’ gathering over tea in someone’s private home….to quite large…….for example the wonderful staff at Chico’s that have held a number of fundraising events whereby a portion of the proceeds from sales on a particular day go to The Gathering Place.

Mrs. Claus’s Closet, the fabulous annual holiday kick-off event in Westlake, has named The Gathering Place as one of its charitable beneficiaries for the last two years. We will once again receive that support when Mrs. Claus' Closet has their 'Peek in the Closet' on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Wagoner's Country Inn in Westlake.

Last year, community-based fundraisers brought in over $55,000 in revenue to help support operating costs of The Gathering Place!

On October 17th, one such community-based fundraising event is the 2nd Annual Just Horsin' Around Clambake for the Cause.  The event will be held at Maple Crest Farm in Brecksville and will feature family-friendly activities such as a hay maze, pumpkin decorating, live music and a horse drill team.  Additional information about this event can be found on by clicking here.

As we begin our 10th year of service for those touched by cancer, we are forever grateful to our community of supporters – large and small.

Another way in which our community can support The Gathering Place is through United Way Services. Please remember that you can designate up to 50% of your United Way contribution to The Gathering Place as long as your United Way donation is $100 or more. We can also receive contributions through the Combined Federal Campaign.
